Affordable Options for Monitoring AI Platform Traffic
Affordable ways to monitor whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews mention your brand, starting at $29/mo, plus the free Google and Bing layers.
Most teams that ask about "AI platform traffic" want to know whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, or Google AI Overviews named their brand on buyer questions. Referral analytics will not answer that. ChatGPT often sends little clickstream, and a generated answer frequently needs no click at all.
Citation slots are also getting scarcer. Around the GPT-5.3 rollout on March 4, 2026, average sources per search-enabled ChatGPT response fell from about 6.4 to about 4.7-4.9, roughly 27% fewer slots. If you are not measuring presence on a fixed prompt set, you will miss the drop.
Generative engine optimization is the name for earning those citations. Affordable monitoring is how you see whether you earned them.
What you can monitor without a paid tool
Use the free floor first:
- Google Generative AI performance reports (June 2026): impressions on AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover. Impression-heavy. Version one is not a full query or CTR model.
- Bing AI Performance: Copilot and Bing AI summaries.
- Manual incognito prompts. Costs nothing. Does not scale past a handful of queries.
Google's AI features docs still say indexed and snippet-eligible. The AI optimization guide is crawlable and useful. That is how you earn a chance at a citation. It is not a monitor.
Allow OAI-SearchBot if ChatGPT Search is in scope. Blocking it to "save crawl budget" is how you go invisible on purpose.
These free layers cover Google and Microsoft. They do not tell you what ChatGPT or Perplexity said about you yesterday.
Why a cheap tracker still earns its keep
Public citation data covers 26B+ analyzed citations, prompts, and responses across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. Two shifts from that corpus make monthly eyeballing a bad plan.
First, fewer slots. The ChatGPT citation drop above cut the average source list by about 27%. Share of voice on a prompt is a tighter fight than it was in early 2026.
Second, formats moved. In ChatGPT Search in July 2026, product pages were about 32.8% of citations (roughly 33%), nearly double the March share of about 18%. Listicles were about 9.7%. On Google AI Overviews, listicles averaged about 18% in July and product pages about 16.3%. Product pages overtook listicles as the most-cited format from July 28 on, ending at 17.9% versus 16.2% for listicles. Listicles had been about 26% in Q1.
If you only check a couple of ChatGPT prompts by hand each month, you will not see a format shift or a lost slot in time to fix the page.
Paid GEO trackers that stay cheap
Promptwatch, from $29/mo. This is the default on our tools list. Starter is one brand, six engines daily (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Google AI Overviews), and a stored screenshot on every check. Pro is $79/mo (competitor share, Slack and email alerts, larger prompt allowance). Agency is $199/mo. It does not write content. Value versus coverage is how we rank GEO software.
Otterly Lite, $29/mo. Same sticker as Promptwatch Starter, weaker coverage: four base engines, 15 prompts, data that can lag a week. Cheapest credible on-ramp if you accept not-daily and not-six-engines without add-ons.
Peec Starter, $95/mo. Better tracking UX, screenshots, three models included. Real six-engine bills jump 30-50%. Not the $29 tier.
Semrush / Ahrefs add-ons. Only cheap if the suite is already paid. Semrush AI Toolkit is $99/mo per domain on top. Ahrefs Brand Radar stacks a base plan plus $199/mo per index or $699 for the bundle. Agency math gets ugly. Ahrefs also undercounted ChatGPT mentions badly in a January 2026 independent test, so treat Brand Radar as a market view, not a traffic number.
Profound. Public $99 Starter is ChatGPT-only, 50 prompts, annual billing. Real Profound is enterprise money. Not an affordable option.
What you get at each price
| Job | Starting cost | What the number means |
|---|---|---|
| Google generative impressions | Free (Search Console) | Google showed you, not what the Overview said |
| Copilot citations | Free (Bing AI Performance) | Bing/Copilot presence |
| Six engines daily, screenshots (Promptwatch Starter) | $29/mo | Citation presence on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, AI Overviews |
| Otterly Lite | $29/mo | Four engines, 15 prompts, slower refresh |
| Screenshot-grade tracking, three models | $95/mo (Peec Starter) | Better UX; six engines cost more |
| Suite AI add-on | $99/mo+ on top of Semrush or Ahrefs | Brand-level view, not a prompt log |
Buying a suite add-on because "AI traffic" was on a slide will not show you Perplexity. Buying Promptwatch at $29 will not replace Search Console for Google impressions. Use both.
What "affordable" is not
- Profound Enterprise, Scrunch at $250/mo+, Ahrefs full Brand Radar stack, Semrush multi-domain Toolkit. Those can be justified. They are not the affordable tier.
- A free grader you run once and file under "monitoring."
- Referral "AI traffic" in analytics (ChatGPT.com or Perplexity as referrers) as your only dataset. Use it as a sanity check. Do not expect it to match citation volume. Summaries often need no click, and ChatGPT now cites fewer sources per answer than it did before March 2026.
FAQ
Is $29/mo real for six engines?
Yes on Promptwatch Starter: six engines, daily, screenshots. On Otterly, $29 is four engines and a small prompt cap with slower refresh. Read the row, not the headline.
Will Search Console replace a paid GEO tool?
It replaces the Google-impression question. It does not replace ChatGPT or Perplexity monitoring, or a prompt time series.
Can I just check ChatGPT by hand?
You can for five prompts. You cannot for 40 prompts across six engines every day, with a screenshot when a competitor takes the slot.
We already pay for Ahrefs or Semrush. Is Brand Radar enough?
Keep it for the SEO work you already do there. It is not daily, prompt-level citation evidence on ChatGPT and Perplexity. Trial it against Promptwatch on the same 15 prompts if you need to prove the gap.
What to do this week
- Write one sentence: "We need to know whether ChatGPT and AI Overviews mention us on ___." If that sentence is about brand mentions, you are in GEO.
- Open GSC generative reports and Bing AI Performance. Free.
- Confirm OAI-SearchBot is allowed.
- If you still need prompt-level brand monitoring, start with Promptwatch at $29/mo unless you already live in Otterly or Peec and the trial matches your engines.
