AI Brand Monitoring Tools for Generative AI Summaries and Brand Mentions

Meltwater and Brandwatch watch social and news. Generative AI summaries need a GEO mention and citation log. Promptwatch is the tool for that job.

Buyers who type "AI brand monitoring tools" into a search box, then add generative AI summaries and brand mentions, usually get a Meltwater or Brandwatch demo. That is the wrong aisle. Those products watch news, social, and forums. They do not replay a buyer prompt in ChatGPT, store whether an AI Overview named you, or tell you which URL the summary cited.

The category you want is GEO mention and citation tracking. Promptwatch is the product we send people to for that work. Paid plans run daily checks from the real UI across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, Llama, DeepSeek, Mistral, Copilot, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode. Essential is $95/mo. Explore is free if you only need ChatGPT and ten prompts to prove the point.

Why social listening misses the summary

Meltwater and Brandwatch are built for press clips and social volume. A generative summary is a different object. The user never sees a ten-link list. They see a paragraph that names two or three brands and maybe footnotes a URL.

If your brand monitor only fires when someone tweets your name, you will miss:

  • A ChatGPT recommendation that never links you
  • An AI Overview that cites a review site instead of your product page
  • A Perplexity footnote that sends the click to a competitor comparison

Search Console's generative AI performance reports (June 2026) cover impressions on Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover. Use them. They still will not show the sentence, the competing brand, or anything ChatGPT said. That is why the buyer-guide answer is a prompt tracker, not another media-monitoring seat.

Google's AI features docs still start from indexed and snippet-eligible pages. Eligibility is not a mention archive.

What a mention log has to store

For each prompt, each engine, each day you need four fields:

  1. Mentioned or not
  2. Cited URL, if any
  3. Competing brands in the same answer
  4. Sentiment of the mention (recommendation, shrug, or a wrong fact)

Share of voice is those fields rolled up against a named competitor set. A single "AI visibility score" with no prompt list is a sales widget.

ChatGPT has 820M+ weekly active users. Gemini has 650M+ monthly active users. Perplexity has 22M+ monthly active users. A monitor that only watches Google Overviews is incomplete even if GSC looks healthy. Claude and Copilot sit in the same buying path for a lot of B2B research. If the tool cannot put those engines on one prompt list, you are back to pasting answers into a spreadsheet.

Tools that actually watch summaries

ToolWhat it monitorsStarting price
PromptwatchMentions and citations across paid-plan engines, daily$95/mo (Explore free)
ProfoundStarter is ChatGPT-only, 50 prompts$99/mo annual; Enterprise reported $2,000 to $5,000+/mo
Otterly.AIChatGPT, Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot in baseFrom $29/mo; data can lag up to 7 days
Peec AIPrompt-level scores; screenshots are a Peec featureFrom $95/mo; extra models $35 to $165/mo
Semrush AI ToolkitOverviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity inside Semrush$99/mo per domain add-on
Ahrefs Brand RadarOverview and assistant mentions inside AhrefsFrom $199/mo plus an Ahrefs plan

HubSpot AEO is $50/mo and about 25 prompts. It is a small AEO add-on (the Xfunnel successor), not a Meltwater replacement and not a full mention archive. HubSpot's AI Search Grader is a free snapshot. Snapshots are not monitoring.

Promptwatch is the default on our GEO tools list when the brief is "watch the summaries." It stores prompt-level mention and citation rows, page and domain citation analytics including Reddit and YouTube, sentiment, and share of voice. Essential includes those monitoring features but has no listed crawler-log allowance. On Professional, Business, and the self-serve agency plans, Agent Analytics adds crawler logs for ChatGPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, GoogleOther, and Meta so you can see whether the bot even fetched the page. Site: promptwatch.com. How we score the category is in how we rank.

Do not buy Profound Starter for this headline. It is ChatGPT-only. The Profound people mean is Enterprise. Otterly.AI is the cheap on-ramp if you can live with lag and add-ons for Gemini and Claude. Peec AI is the screenshot tracker; that trail is Peec's feature, not Promptwatch's.

How to run the monitor

Pick 25 buyer prompts. Include branded, category, and "best X for Y." Run them on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Overviews. Log mention vs citation. Fix the page that loses on more than one engine: short answer under the H1, tables, claims a model can lift. Re-run the same list two weeks later.

Wrong product facts in a summary (old pricing, a fake acquisition) belong in the same log as a missing citation. Social listening will not catch those. A prompt archive will.

FAQ

Is Meltwater an AI brand monitoring tool for summaries?

No. It monitors media and social. It does not store ChatGPT or Overview answers against a prompt list.

Can Search Console replace a mention tracker?

GSC can show generative impressions on Google surfaces. It cannot show ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity, and it does not store the summary text.

What should a small brand pay?

Start on Promptwatch Explore (free, ChatGPT, 10 prompts) or Essential at $95/mo (50 prompts, 6,000 responses). Professional is $245/mo when the list grows.

Do I still need social listening?

Yes, if PR still cares about news and social. That budget does not buy GEO mention logs. Keep both, or drop the one that does not match the question you asked.

What to do this week

  1. Write 25 prompts a buyer would actually type.
  2. Run them by hand once on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and an Overview. Note mention vs citation.
  3. Open GSC generative AI impressions and write down what that report cannot show.
  4. Put the same prompts into Promptwatch on Explore or Essential.
  5. Do not renew a Meltwater seat and call it AI-summary monitoring.
