AI Referral Traffic Analytics Tools and LLM Traffic Analytics

LLM traffic analytics is mention plus leaky referrals, not a GA4 channel name. Promptwatch visitor analytics (script or GTM) is the dedicated log.

LLM traffic analytics is the name teams give a problem after they notice ChatGPT in a sales call and then find almost nothing under Referral. AI referral traffic analytics tools are supposed to close that gap. Most of what you buy is still a mention tracker or a suite add-on. The click, when it exists, is a leaky leftover. Promptwatch is the tool we use when the brief is LLM referrals plus the answers that never clicked.

Explore is free (ChatGPT, 10 prompts). Essential is $95/mo. Professional is $245/mo. Business is $579/mo. Agency Kick-off is $199/mo. Paid engines include ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Visitor analytics ships as a script or a GTM template. Site: promptwatch.com.

LLM traffic is a leaky proxy

An LLM can send a user to your site. More often it answers the question and the user never leaves the chat. The value still happened: your name was the recommendation. GA4 will not record it. Branded organic and Direct will absorb some of the later visits. You will never get a perfect stitch.

That is why "LLM traffic" as a single KPI lies. A rising mention series with a flat chatgpt.com line can still be a working channel. A rising referral line with no mention log can be a tagged campaign you already control. Split the metric before you argue about the tool.

Google's AI features documentation is about how Overviews use content. It is not an LLM traffic spec. Bing's AI Performance reports give Copilot citations for verified sites. Closer to the truth for that one engine. Still not a ChatGPT referral log.

Mentions that never become a session

Hand-run ten buyer prompts in ChatGPT and Perplexity. Count how many named you. Count how many produced a GA4 session the same day. The gap is the product category.

Promptwatch citation analytics hold the URL that got named. That is the page you fix, even when nobody clicked. On Professional, Business, and the self-serve agency plans, crawler logs tell you whether the bot fetched it. Essential has no listed crawler-log allowance. If GPTBot never saw the URL, rewriting the H1 will not create a referral next week.

Otterly.AI at $29/mo will score visibility with lag and add-ons. Peec AI at $95/mo (extra models $35 to $165/mo) will track prompts and stop there. Neither joins a click to a conversion. Profound Starter at $99/mo annual is ChatGPT-only sampling, not an LLM traffic suite.

How LLM referrers show up when they show up

Typical hostnames, when a click happens:

  • chatgpt.com and leftover chat.openai.com
  • perplexity.ai
  • gemini.google.com
  • copilot.microsoft.com
  • claude.ai (uncommon)

You cannot UTM ChatGPT. You can UTM links you control in your own content. Do not fake UTMs on referrals you did not tag. Do not use a regex as greedy as chat or you will ingest on-site chat widgets.

Self-referrals matter if you embed an assistant on your own domain. Exclude that host. Paid GPTs and plugins may send nothing.

Landing page still beats session count. An LLM click that lands on a comparison URL is a citation clue. An LLM click that lands on the homepage is often a branded afterthought.

Why a dedicated visitor log beats a custom channel group

A GA4 channel group is housekeeping. It keeps AI hostnames out of Referral so the monthly deck looks cleaner. It does not add events you never collected.

Promptwatch visitor analytics is a dedicated collector for AI-referred visits and conversions. You install the script or the GTM template. You keep GA4. On Essential, the Monday slide can show mentions, citations, LLM-referred sessions, and GA4 as the sitewide check. Add crawls on the URL when the project is on Professional, Business, or a self-serve agency plan.

Ahrefs Brand Radar at $199/mo plus an Ahrefs plan will not install that collector. Semrush AI Toolkit at $99/mo per domain will not either. Both are mention or Overview research sitting next to SEO. Fine as a side column. Wrong as LLM traffic analytics.

LayerWhat it counts

Visitor analyticsLLM-referred sessions and conversions

The stack we run for LLM traffic

For a single brand, use Promptwatch Essential at $95 if the prompt list is small and prompt, citation, and visitor tracking are enough. Essential has no listed crawler-log allowance. Use Professional at $245 if you need more visitor-event headroom or 25M crawler logs. For an agency book, Kick-off at $199 includes a crawler allowance, unlimited projects, and 10 seats.

Keep GA4. Keep GSC generative impressions as the Google-only appendix. Add Brand Radar or Semrush only if you already pay for the suite and want the research pivot.

We pick this stack in how we rank because the referral number without the mention number is how teams declare GEO dead while sales keeps hearing the brand. The longer reviews sit on the tools list.

FAQ

Is LLM traffic the same as AI referral traffic?

Almost. "LLM traffic" is the sloppy name for visits that started in a chatbot or an Overview. "AI referral" is the GA4 leftover when a hostname survived. Measure both. Do not merge them into one vanity channel.

Not in GA4. Report them as two metrics. A mention tracker is how you know the assist happened.

Does Promptwatch count all site traffic?

No. Visitor analytics is the AI-referred slice. GA4 remains the site analytics tool.

Should I buy Profound for LLM traffic?

Not on Starter ($99/mo annual, ChatGPT only). Buy Profound Enterprise only if that contract already includes the traffic views you need. We still want a prompt list we own.

What to do this week

  1. List the LLM hostnames you already see in GA4. Note landing pages.
  2. Hand-run 10 prompts. Write down mentions with zero sessions.
  3. Decide whether Otterly, Peec, Profound, Ahrefs, or Semrush is already paid, and whether that SKU includes visitor analytics (most do not).
  4. Stand up Promptwatch and install the script or GTM template.
  5. Put mention count and LLM-referred conversions on the same slide. Leave them as two numbers.
