AI Search Optimization Prompt Tracking for GEO and AEO: Prompt Monitoring Tools (2026)
GEO and AEO in 2026 are the same prompt list with different labels. Promptwatch is the prompt monitoring tool we run daily from the real UI.
GEO and AEO in 2026 are one job with two acronyms. GEO is generative engine optimization. AEO is answer engine optimization. Both mean: store the prompt, the engine, mention versus citation. The label you pick changes the slide, not the work. Prompt monitoring tools that only score your chatbot (Langfuse-class) are a different category. Those logs are production traces. They do not tell you whether ChatGPT named your brand on a buyer question, because they record what happened inside your own product, not what a public model said about your brand.
Promptwatch is the GEO/AEO monitor we rank first: prompts you typed, daily UI checks, query fan-outs, citation analytics. Essential is $95/mo. Explore is free and ChatGPT-only. Site: promptwatch.com. Promptwatch also uses "Agentic AI Search Optimization" for Content Agents that draft and publish. That is a layer on top of the monitor, not a second acronym war.
Google's docs still say to ignore many AEO/GEO hacks for Search (llms.txt, chunking). Follow Search Central for Overviews. Use Promptwatch for ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and prompt-level Overviews. Keep GSC for Google impressions.
Otterly.AI is $29 with lag. Peec AI is $95 and three models. Profound Starter is ChatGPT-only. Method: how we rank. Tools list.
Same list, pick a label
Pick GEO or AEO as the label the client already uses. The rows do not change. Buying two monitors to satisfy two slide titles is how you pay twice for the same prompt list, and the two dashboards will disagree on the same answer because they check at different times. The only real split is Google impressions versus assistant (and prompt-level Overview) citations. GSC stays. The prompt list stays.
Explore does not monitor Overviews. ChatGPT only. Use it to see a replay. Essential is the program when Claude, Perplexity, or Overviews are in the brief. Freeze 20 prompts before you load anything. If the wording drifts, you cannot tell whether the model changed or you did, and a check that moved the prompt is not a check of the model.
The frozen list is also what makes the trend readable. A prompt that moved between checks could mean the model swapped a source, a competitor published a better page, or your own page changed. Without the same wording each time, you cannot attribute the movement, and the report turns into a guess about which of three causes did it. Frozen wording turns the guess into a read.
Langfuse-class is not this job
If you ship an assistant, you already need traces, cost, and latency. That is prompt monitoring in the observability sense. It is not GEO/AEO. Do not paste those traces into a brand-visibility QBR, because a drop in your app's latency has nothing to do with whether ChatGPT cited your homepage. Do not ask a GEO tracker to debug your model's latency. Two dashboards. Two owners.
The named GEO SKUs
Otterly at $29 is a lagged proof. Fine to show that a mention exists. Weak as the daily monitor next to a list you promised to recheck, because a lagged mention next to a promised recheck is a broken promise.
Peec at $95 is a three-model scorecard. Daily enough if three models is the SOW. Read which three, because "three models" is not the same three on every plan.
Profound Starter is ChatGPT-only. AEO/GEO decks that name Perplexity or Overviews will bounce off Starter, because Starter does not watch those surfaces.
Promptwatch Essential at $95/mo is the daily UI monitor we run. Fan-outs show the extra searches. Citation analytics names the URL. Content Agents (the "Agentic AI Search Optimization" line) can draft and publish once you know what to write. Skip llms.txt as an Overview tactic while you do that.
The reason to skip llms.txt here is that it does nothing for the surface the brief names. Overviews eligibility is a Google decision, and Google says it does not use the file. The assistants do not document it as an admission ticket either. Writing one burns a sprint on a lever that is not connected to the machine, and the sprint would have been better spent on the page that carries the missing claim.
FAQ
Is AEO different from GEO?
Same prompt list. Different slide title. Pick the word the client already uses.
Does Explore monitor Overviews?
No. ChatGPT only. Essential is the paid monitor for Overviews plus the assistants.
Can a Langfuse-class tool replace this?
No. That stack scores your app. This stack scores public models on prompts you typed.
