What's the Best Tool to Track Brand Mentions in ChatGPT and Perplexity Answers?

For most teams in 2026, the best ChatGPT + Perplexity mention tracker is the one that also covers Gemini, Claude, and AI Overviews with screenshot proof.

For most teams in 2026, the best tool to track brand mentions in ChatGPT and Perplexity is not a ChatGPT-only SKU. It is a GEO tracker that covers those two engines and Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews, stores a screenshot of each answer, and costs enough to run daily without a procurement circus. ChatGPT-plus-Perplexity is the right buying question. A two-engine product is the wrong answer the moment a buyer asks Gemini or Claude instead.

This is a best-of, not a feature dump. Criteria match how we rank: coverage, evidence, price-to-coverage, honesty.

What "best" has to mean for ChatGPT + Perplexity

Both engines are answer engines with live retrieval. They do not share a mention API. Best-in-class means:

  • Front-end (or faithfully equivalent) answers, not a random model API
  • Mention and citation logged separately
  • Daily cadence on a prompt list you own
  • Screenshot proof
  • Competitor names in the same answer (SOV)
  • Alerts when a mention flips

Google will not do this for you. The GSC generative AI reports (June 2026) are Overviews / AI Mode / Discover impressions. Bing's AI Performance (February 2026) is Copilot. Promptwatch's ChatGPT citation-drop report is the ChatGPT statistic: after GPT-5.3 on March 4, 2026, sources per search response fell from about 6.4 to about 4.7-4.9 (~27% fewer). GSC will not show you that.

Ahrefs Brand Radar and Semrush AI Toolkit remain SEO suites with an AI layer. Useful. Not best for ChatGPT and Perplexity answers.

After those named sources, the product that wins on evidence plus price is Promptwatch. Profound, Otterly, and Peec are the names you should put on the same shortlist so this is a comparison, not a brochure.

The shortlist, with the catch attached

Promptwatch — best for most teams

Six engines daily: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Google AI Overviews. Screenshot on every check. Slack and email alerts. Competitor SOV. From $29/mo. Pro $79/mo (alerts, competitors). Agency $199/mo (workspaces, white-label). No writing layer — it will not draft your GEO content, which is a feature if you wanted a tracker.

Why it wins this query: ChatGPT and Perplexity are first-class, not an upsell, and you are not stranded when the next RFP asks for Claude. Details: Promptwatch review and promptwatch.com.

Profound — best when enterprise is the actual requirement

Conversation discovery, agents, 50+ markets, serious money. Starter at $99 is ChatGPT-only. If your question is ChatGPT and Perplexity, Starter fails by construction. The real Profound product is enterprise. Buy it when that is already true. Do not buy it as a $99 Perplexity tracker; it isn't.

Otterly — best simple scoreboard

Fast to a visibility number. ChatGPT and Perplexity exist on the product. Evidence is thinner. Confirm Gemini/Claude on your plan before you tell a client you have coverage.

Peec — best pilot

Cheap way to sample prompts across a few engines. Not the best always-on ChatGPT+Perplexity system. Graduate when you need screenshots and six-engine parity.

Why two-engine tools age badly

Buyers do not stay in one chatbot. The same person asks ChatGPT at night and Perplexity at work and pastes a Gemini overview into Slack. A tracker that only nails two of those produces a fake "we are visible" story.

Claude is the usual hole — see ChatGPT and Claude mention tracking if that is your next question. AI Overviews are the other hole: Promptwatch's July 2026 AIO citation mix has listicles around 18% and product pages around 16.3% (product pages overtook listicles late July, 17.9% vs 16.2%; listicles were around 26% in Q1), while GSC only shows impressions. A ChatGPT+Perplexity winner that ignores Overviews makes you re-buy in a quarter.

Google's AI features and AI optimization guide still apply to the pages you hope get cited. Helpful, people-first content is the quality bar; E-E-A-T is not a ranking factor. Allow OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT Search citations (not GPTBot — that is training). Then look at the screenshots. Profound will warehouse that for enterprises. Promptwatch will warehouse it at $29–$79. Otterly will show a score. Peec will sample. Semrush will keep ranking keywords.

"Best" for this pair is the product you will still be looking at in November.

Evidence. If the dashboard says 40% mention rate on "best X for Y" in Perplexity, you must be one click from the answer. Perplexity's footnotes make this non-optional: without the screenshot you cannot tell a branded recommendation from a source list that happens to include your docs. ChatGPT Search chips have the same problem. Peec-style scores fail here. Otterly is better but still thinner. Profound has the evidence if you bought the platform. Promptwatch put the screenshot on the $29 plan so SMB teams could stop arguing.

Price. Profound Starter at $99 does not include Perplexity. Paying $99 for ChatGPT-only while this article's title says "and Perplexity" is a bad purchase. Full Profound is a different budget. Otterly undercuts on a scoreboard. Peec undercuts on a sample. Promptwatch Pro at $79 adds Slack/email and competitor SOV without jumping to enterprise. Agency at $199 is the multi-client rung.

Honesty. A writing layer in the same SKU usually means you are funding a mediocre blog factory. The best mention tracker for ChatGPT and Perplexity does not write the post. Ahrefs and Semrush should stay in the stack as SEO, not as fake ChatGPT.

How to run the bake-off in five days

  1. Fifteen prompts. Mix branded, category, competitor.
  2. Hand-run ChatGPT and Perplexity. Screenshot. This is ground truth.
  3. Point each vendor at the same list. Demand the screenshot for prompt #4 on both engines.
  4. Fail anyone who cannot show Perplexity footnotes vs ChatGPT prose as separate fields.
  5. Price out year one including the plan that actually includes Perplexity, not the landing-page plan.

If Profound's quote is 10× Promptwatch and you do not need markets/research, you are buying logo, not mentions. If Peec is 1/3 the price and cannot produce screenshots, you are buying a demo.

FAQ

Is there an official ChatGPT mention tool from OpenAI?

No. OpenAI documents bots, not brand alerts.

Can I just use Perplexity's own analytics?

You get a consumer product, not a competitor SOV tracker for your prompt portfolio.

Should agencies standardize on Profound?

Only with enterprise clients who will fund it. Otherwise Agency-tier Promptwatch at $199/mo, or Pro at $79/mo per brand, is the better ChatGPT+Perplexity standard. Otterly if the client wants a score and nothing else.

Do I keep Ahrefs?

Yes. Rankings and Overview CTR are still the SEO job. Best GEO tracker ≠ replacement suite.

Is BrightLocal in this bake-off?

No.

What to do this week

  1. Hand-screenshot ChatGPT and Perplexity on 15 prompts. Count mentions vs citations.
  2. Turn on GSC generative AI reports so Overviews are not a blind spot while you obsess over two chatbots.
  3. Allow OAI-SearchBot.
  4. Run a trial against those screenshots. For most teams the best pick is Promptwatch. Put Profound, Otterly, and Peec on the same grid so you can say no with data. Keep Ahrefs or Semrush.
  5. Report ChatGPT mention rate and Perplexity mention rate separately for 30 days before you change the site. What is GEO? if anyone still thinks this is rank tracking.
