How to Connect Promptwatch MCP to Claude, Cursor, and ChatGPT

Add the URL, then pick a key
Supported clients include Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT/Codex, and any other MCP client that can call a hosted HTTP server. Auth is OAuth or a Bearer API key. Create a project-level read-only API key and copy it once. Store it like any other token. A token in a chat log is a leaked token, so paste it into the client config and never into a message.
Keys have a scope you should pick on purpose. Project keys see one project. Org keys see every project on the org. Read-only keys hide write tools. Use a project read-only key for a shared Cursor rule or a ChatGPT workspace. Use an org key only when the person on the other side is allowed to see every client. Keep write-capable keys off shared ChatGPT threads. A shared thread with a write key is a shared publish button, and the thread does not ask before it presses it.
The official ChatGPT plugin and Claude connector use this same MCP server. If you already installed those listings, you did not add a second backend. You pointed a store UI at the same host. OpenAI's Publishers and Developers FAQ is still the crawl-and-referral rule for ChatGPT Search. MCP reads your Promptwatch project. It does not replace that FAQ. Read the project you already monitor

That is the useful set for a weekly question: which prompts dropped, which URLs got cited, whether a crawler error showed up, whether AI-referred visits moved. Ask for this week's citation or visibility changes on one project. The assistant can return a short list instead of a chart, which is often what you actually wanted from the chart.
MCP is not a second dataset. It reads the project you already monitor. If Prompt Explorer is empty, the assistant will still produce a confident paragraph. Fill the project first. A confident paragraph over an empty project is the most expensive kind of wrong, because it reads like an answer and there is no data behind it.
If the key allows writes, the same server can manage prompts, tags, topics, and personas, generate content, work Content Agent slots, push drafts or publish to a connected CMS, and create reports and action items. That is convenient in a private Cursor window. It is a problem in a company-wide ChatGPT thread. A read-only key is the default for any assistant that should not publish. The write path is for the person who owns the inbox, not for the person who asked the question in a channel.
