How to Refresh an Existing Page with Promptwatch Content Refresh
Point the Promptwatch refresh agent at a page and the prompt it should win. How to pick the refresh level, the competitor pages, and how to check the result.
Most sites don't have a content shortage. They have a decay problem. The comparison post that earned ChatGPT citations last spring now loses to a competitor page with a fresher table. The pricing explainer still ranks in Google and has quietly dropped out of Perplexity answers. Writing a new page for that prompt usually makes things worse, because now two of your URLs compete for the same citation.
The better move is to rewrite the page you have. Promptwatch calls this Content Refresh. You point the refresh agent at one of your URLs and the tracked prompt you want it to win, and it produces a rewritten version informed by the competitor pages AI models actually cite for that prompt. The steps below follow Promptwatch's Content Refresh documentation, read October 15, 2026.
When to refresh instead of write
Promptwatch lists three situations, and they match what we see:
- A content gap report says the page exists but doesn't cover the topic well.
- A page is losing citations it used to earn.
- A competitor page keeps outranking yours in AI answers.
All three have the same shape. The URL already has some authority, some internal links, maybe some citation history. Throwing that away for a new page is the expensive option.
Run the refresh agent
Open Content in the left rail, then Content Refresh, and click Run refresh agent. The dialog asks for six things.
Prompt. The tracked prompt the page should perform on. Everything else anchors to it, including which competitor pages are offered as references. Pick the prompt you actually lost, not a broad category prompt.
Page to refresh. Choose it from your crawled sitemap, or enter a URL directly if it isn't there yet and Promptwatch fetches it.
Refresh level. Conservative makes light edits and preserves structure. Balanced, the default, rewrites sections while keeping the key structure. Full Rewrite rebuilds from scratch. We start with Balanced on most pages. Conservative suits pages that are still cited on other prompts, because restructuring them risks the citations they keep. Full Rewrite is for pages where the structure is the problem.
Persona and tone. These default from the prompt's persona and your AI Settings under Brand. Usually you confirm rather than configure.
Competitor pages. Up to five, chosen from the prompt's cited sources. The agent studies why those pages get cited and folds their strengths into your rewrite. Pick the pages that beat you on this prompt, not just any rival URL. This is the most important choice in the dialog, and it is the step a generic AI writer can't do, because a generic writer has no idea which pages the model cited yesterday.
Advanced options. Image settings, blocked words, the author shown on CMS publish, and which tools the agent may use, including web search, competitor page analysis, internal link finding, and Knowledge Base search. These default from project settings.
You can save the configuration as a draft and run it later.
Other ways in
You rarely start from the blank dialog. Content gap recommendations with a Refresh page button open it with the URL and gap context filled in. Sitemap page detail has a Run refresh agent button. Some Action Board items open it too.
Review the diff, then publish
After you click Run Agent, the editor opens while the agent works in the background. When it finishes, use the Differences toggle to compare the rewrite with the original. Read it like an editor. Check that product facts and prices are still right, that claims you can't back up didn't sneak in, and that the parts of the page that were working survived.
Then publish like any other document: push it to a connected CMS (Webflow, Framer, or WordPress) or update the page yourself and record the URL. Make sure the page is in the Page Tracker. That is where you find out whether the rewrite won back the citations you targeted, because the row shows responses, distinct prompts, and last-cited time for that URL.
Content refresh is listed on every paid brand plan: Essential $95/mo, Professional $245/mo, Business $579/mo. Explore is free with 10 ChatGPT prompts. We don't have a published figure for whether a refresh draws on the AEO article allowance, so check your usage page after the first run. Review: Promptwatch. Product: promptwatch.com.

No. It creates a rewritten draft. Nothing changes on your site until you publish.
How many competitor pages can I use?
Up to five, picked from the prompt's cited sources.
Which refresh level should I start with?
Balanced, the default. Use Conservative on pages still cited elsewhere and Full Rewrite when the structure is the problem.
