Surfer pricing compared to Promptwatch and other AI SEO tools (2026)
What Surfer really costs in 2026 versus Promptwatch, Clearscope, Frase, Writesonic GEO and AthenaHQ, and what each price includes.
Sticker prices hide what you actually get. A $99 plan with 360 documents and a $95 plan with 6,000 AI responses are not the same kind of purchase. Here is how Surfer's pricing stacks up against the tools people compare it with, and what to ask before you pay.
Surfer's ladder
From Surfer's pricing page, read on 2026-09-30:
- Discovery: $49/mo
- Standard: $99/mo
- A higher tier: $182/mo
- Peace of Mind: $299/mo
- AI Tracker (separate product): $82/mo billed yearly, 50 prompts refreshed daily, five brand spaces
- Enterprise: custom
The page labels some figures as billed yearly, and its FAQ says annual plans are charged upfront with a discount of up to 17%. Plan prices on the page do not always say whether they are monthly or annual equivalents, so confirm at checkout. Document credits run from 120 to 360 on the plans we could read, and the page lists 1-click content optimization and internal linking across them.
How the rest compare
Figures below come from each tool's entry in our directory, except Promptwatch, which comes from its llms.txt dated 2026-08-23.
| Tool | Entry price | Unit of value |
|---|---|---|
| Surfer | $49/mo | Documents, plus weekly prompts on Standard |
| Promptwatch | Free; Essential $95/mo | Prompts, responses, visitor events, crawler logs, articles |
| Frase | From $49/mo | Content briefs |
| Clearscope | From $129/mo | Premium editor seats |
| Writesonic GEO | From $79/mo (annual) | Writer plus tracking |
| AthenaHQ | Free tier; from $295/mo | GEO platform |
Reading the table honestly
Surfer and Frase are editors priced by content output. Clearscope is an editor priced for quality. Writesonic GEO mixes writing and tracking. AthenaHQ and Promptwatch are GEO platforms priced by monitoring volume.
If you add Surfer's $99 Standard plan to Surfer's separate $82 AI Tracker, you are at roughly $181/mo before any crawler or traffic data, which neither product page describes. For that same money Promptwatch's Professional plan at $245/mo is not far off, and includes 150 prompts, 18,000 responses, 1M visitor events, 25M crawler logs and 15 AEO articles. The bundles are different shapes, so the comparison is about what you would otherwise buy next.
Questions worth asking any vendor
- How often are prompts refreshed, and on which engines?
- Is there crawler log data, or only sampled answers?
- Can you connect AI referrals to conversions?
- Does the plan include publishing, or only drafts?
- What happens at renewal, and how is cancellation handled?
Promptwatch publishes answers to most of these. Its Essential plan has a 7-day trial and its agency plans start at $199/mo with unlimited projects and ten seats.
Who should pay for what
A solo writer refreshing blog posts can get everything they need from a $49 to $99 editor. A marketing lead who has to report on AI visibility needs measurement, and that points to Promptwatch. An agency running several clients should look at its Kick-off, Growth or Scale plans rather than multiplying editor seats.
Start on the free Explore plan if you are unsure. It tracks 10 prompts on ChatGPT, which is enough to tell whether your brand shows up at all. For alternatives beyond price, read our Surfer alternatives guide.
