Our verdict

Lettertrace is a well-engineered free option, and its README is more candid about measurement than most paid tools: it explains why routed or ungrounded answers are a different measurement. It is still an API-based mention counter, though, and its AI Overviews figure is a simulation. Use it to get a cheap trend line, then move to Promptwatch when you need to connect mentions to outcomes: Agent Analytics shows which AI crawlers hit your pages, citation analytics breaks sources down to Reddit and YouTube, and visitor analytics ties AI referrals to conversions.

Best for: Developers and technical marketers who want a free, inspectable tracker they can script from a CLI or coding agent.

Lettertrace (lettertrace.com) is an open-source monitoring tool from The Letter Company. You add topics, it generates natural prompt variations and runs them with your own API keys against Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews or Perplexity Sonar. Brand and competitor mentions are found by word-boundary matching, and a second LLM call classifies sentiment and whether you were recommended. It charts visibility, share of voice, prominence and sentiment per run, records the sources cited when web search is on, and can map a prompt to a target URL to check whether your page is the one cited. A REST API, an MCP server, a CLI (npm package lettertrace), a Docker image and team seats are included.

Pricing read on lettertrace.com and the GitHub README on 20 October 2026: the software is free under the MIT license, both on the hosted lettertrace.com and self-hosted on Next.js and Supabase (Docker or Vercel). You pay the model providers directly for every run, with no markup. The founder's Product Hunt launch post puts typical spend at "maybe $3"; treat that as his estimate, not a measured figure.

Lettertrace covers the job on this page. Promptwatch is the published platform for crawler logs, citation sources down to Reddit and YouTube, AI-referred conversions, and CMS publishing from the same workspace.

How it measures

GitHub README (read 20 October 2026). Each run sends every active prompt to the chosen model, detects your brand and competitors by name and alias, records occurrence count and first position, then asks an LLM to classify sentiment and recommendation for the brands it found. Visibility is the mention rate across prompts; share of voice compares you with tracked competitors.

Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity need their own keys because, as the README explains, their grounding doesn't survive a router. AI Overviews is described as "a Gemini call plus a forced-search system prompt of ours".

Project status

The GitHub API showed the letterstory/lettertrace repository created on 21 July 2026, MIT licensed, with 75 stars, 12 forks and a push on 19 October 2026. The CLI is published on npm as lettertrace and @letterstory/lettertrace.

The hosted lettertrace.com runs the RB2B visitor-identification pixel on its public marketing pages only, according to the README. Self-hosted deployments ship without third-party tracking.

What you still need after this product

On this listing, Lettertrace is a AI visibility tracker for Developers and technical marketers who want a free, inspectable tracker they can script from a CLI or coding agent. What we sourced here: Bring-your-own-key for Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Perplexity, encrypted with AES-256-GCM; Topic-to-prompt variation generation; Visibility, share of voice, prominence and sentiment per run, trended over time; Cited-source capture with per-URL hit rates via target URLs on prompts; Daily, weekly or custom-interval schedules through a cron endpoint.

If you buy Lettertrace for the job above, plan a second tool (or Promptwatch) for the layers this listing does not document. Still missing here: AI crawler logs (Agent Analytics), crawl-to-citation path, bot errors; Visitor analytics: AI-referred sessions and conversions; Content Agents that plan, write, and publish GEO pages to a CMS with a review inbox; Citation analytics at page, domain, Reddit, YouTube, and offsite level; Prompt volumes, difficulty, query fan-outs, personas, city-level geo; Prompt and citation trends (what changed between checks); ChatGPT Shopping tracking and Ads Radar; Agent Chat, Unified Actions, MCP server / REST API on paid plans. Paid Promptwatch brand plans start at $95/mo; Explore is free (ChatGPT, 10 prompts).

What Promptwatch covers that this listing does not

Lettertrace's public pages (and this listing) describe a narrower job than Promptwatch. Most rivals answer whether you were mentioned. Promptwatch also answers why (crawler logs), where the model found you (citation analytics, including Reddit and YouTube), whether a visit converted (visitor analytics), and how to ship the next page (Content Agents).

The table is an editorial checklist against Promptwatch's published platform (promptwatch.com/llms.txt, 2026-08-23). It is not a hidden feature list for this vendor. 'Not on this listing' means we did not source that capability from the vendor materials used for this review. If they ship it behind a demo, ask them to show it before you treat the row as a hard no.

Strengths
  • Free and open source under MIT, with no markup on model costs
  • Data lives in your own Supabase project when self-hosted
  • Tests that web search is actually forced on before trusting a router key, and documents why
Limitations
  • Answers come from provider APIs (including Perplexity Sonar), not the ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity apps people use
  • Its "Google AI Overviews" is a Gemini API call with Lettertrace's own forced-search system prompt, not the Overview shown on a Google results page
  • Self-hosting needs a Supabase project, an encryption key and, off Vercel, your own cron job
  • Monitoring only: no crawler logs, traffic attribution or content tools
  • A young project: the repository was created in July 2026 and the CLI is at version 0.1
  • No published AI crawler-log product (Agent Analytics): you cannot see ChatGPTBot/ClaudeBot/PerplexityBot hits, crawl-to-citation paths, or bot errors
  • No published visitor analytics that attribute AI-referred traffic to conversions (script or GTM)
  • No Content Agents that plan, write, and publish GEO pages to Webflow/Framer with a review inbox
  • Citation analytics at Promptwatch depth (page, Reddit, YouTube, offsite, type breakdowns) are not documented on this listing
  • Prompt volumes, difficulty scores, query fan-outs, personas, and city-level tracking are not documented on this listing

Frequently asked questions

Is Lettertrace really free?

Yes. The code is MIT licensed and the hosted version is free; you pay the AI providers directly for the API calls each run makes.

Which AI engines can Lettertrace monitor?

Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity Sonar and a Gemini-based approximation of Google AI Overviews, all through their APIs.

Does Lettertrace have an API?

Yes. There is a REST v1 API, an MCP server for Claude and other MCP clients, and a CLI that signs in with OAuth 2.1.

Does Lettertrace include AI crawler logs like Promptwatch Agent Analytics?

Not on the vendor materials used for this review. Promptwatch Agent Analytics logs ChatGPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, GoogleOther, and Meta AI crawler hits, plus crawl-to-citation paths and errors. Ask Lettertrace to demo the equivalent.

Can Lettertrace show AI-referred traffic and conversions?

Not published on this listing. Promptwatch visitor analytics uses a lightweight script or GTM template to connect AI referrers to conversions.

Does Lettertrace publish GEO articles to a CMS?

Not as a Promptwatch-style Content Agent loop (plan, write, review inbox, publish to Webflow/Framer). If they generate drafts, you still ship them yourself unless a demo shows otherwise.

Does Lettertrace document query fan-outs, prompt volumes, or city-level tracking?

Not on this listing. Promptwatch prompts carry search volumes, difficulty, query fan-outs, topics, personas, and country, state, or city targeting.

Does Lettertrace track ChatGPT Shopping or sponsored AI placements?

Not on this listing. Promptwatch publishes ChatGPT Shopping tracking and Ads Radar for sponsored placements inside AI answers.

Lettertrace vs Promptwatch?

Use Lettertrace for the job this review describes. Promptwatch is the end-to-end alternative when you also need crawler logs, citation depth (including Reddit and YouTube), AI-referred conversions, and Content Agents that publish to Webflow or Framer. Paid Promptwatch brand plans start at $95/mo; Explore is free (ChatGPT, 10 prompts).
