SEO suites that added AI tracking versus dedicated GEO platforms: what rank means in an AI answer, what each camp measures, and which to buy.
Two kinds of vendors now sell AI search rank tracking. SEO suites like Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking and Mangools have added an AI module next to their keyword tools. Dedicated GEO platforms were built around prompts from day one. Both put a number on a dashboard and call it a rank. The difference between the two camps comes down to what that number means and what you can do with it afterward.
This guide explains the measurement first, then walks through each camp so you can tell which one fits your team.
What "rank" means in an AI answer
A Google results page has positions one through ten. An AI answer doesn't, so tools measure rank in a few different ways.
Position in a list. When ChatGPT recommends five project management tools, you're first, third, or absent. This is the closest thing to a classic rank, and it's the one buyers act on.
Visibility share. Across a set of prompts or repeated runs, how often do you appear at all? This smooths out the fact that the same prompt can return different answers on different runs.
Prompt trends. How your position and visibility on a single prompt move over time, and what changed between checks.
There's also a difference between being mentioned and being cited. A mention is your name in the prose. A citation is your URL in the sources. A tool that only reports one will mislead you about the other.
Answers vary from run to run, which is why method matters. Mangools, for example, runs each prompt multiple times and reports averages, which is an honest way to handle the variance.

Semrush AI Toolkit
Semrush AI Toolkit tracks brand mentions and links inside answers from Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity, with competitor comparisons and a combined SEO and GEO view. It costs $99/mo per domain as an add-on. Extra domains, extra users and extra blocks of 50 prompts each cost more ($99, $99 and $60 a month). The tracked prompts are AI-generated approximations mapped from keywords rather than prompts you write yourself. Claude, Copilot and DeepSeek are held for the sales-led Enterprise AIO tier.
Ahrefs Brand Radar
Ahrefs Brand Radar measures how often your brand appears in AI Overviews and AI assistants against competitors, on top of the Ahrefs index. You need an Ahrefs base plan ($129/mo and up), then $199/mo per AI index or $699/mo for all six. Prompts are modeled from Google keyword data, chatbot indexes refresh on roughly monthly snapshots, and Claude, Grok and Meta AI aren't in the native indexes. It's good for directional research at index scale and weak for prompt-level tracking.
SE Ranking AI Tracker
SE Ranking AI Tracker monitors AI Overviews and chat answers inside the SE Ranking suite, from $89/mo for the suite plus the AI add-on. One check equals one prompt on one engine, so five engines cost five checks. Citation-level tracking, meaning which page earned the mention, is still under development, and Claude is on the roadmap.
Mangools AI Search Watcher
Mangools AI Search Watcher covers eight engines: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Mistral and Llama. It reports average positions, visibility scores and citation insights, with competitor comparisons. It's included in Mangools Basic, Premium and Agency plans, though the watcher page doesn't publish those prices.
What the SEO camp does well: one login, AI data next to rankings and backlinks, and no new vendor. What it doesn't publish: AI crawler logs, visitor analytics that tie AI referrals to conversions, or content tools that publish a fix.
Dedicated GEO platforms

AthenaHQ tracks eight engines, rolls results into a GEO score, and turns findings into an Action Center task queue. There's a free tier, and paid plans start at $295/mo on credit-based billing. Personas and multi-region tracking are Enterprise-gated.
Scrunch AI
Scrunch AI offers monitoring across up to nine engines on Enterprise and serves AI-optimized page versions to crawlers. It starts at $250/mo billed annually, and data refreshes weekly.
Profound
Profound runs scheduled prompts and reports citation share by prompt cluster, but it's now sold mainly as enterprise marketing agents. Starter is $99/mo yearly for ChatGPT only. Growth is $399/mo yearly for three engines, and Enterprise starts around $40k a year.

Which camp to buy from
If you already pay for an SEO suite and only need a directional AI column next to your keywords, its add-on is a reasonable start. Expect modeled prompts in Semrush and Ahrefs, and check the per-domain or per-check math before you scale it.
If AI answers are becoming a real acquisition channel, track it like one. That means prompts you choose, ranked with volume and difficulty, and trends per prompt.
