BrightLocal Local AI Visibility review (2026): A free add-on for local businesses, with limits
BrightLocal's Local AI Visibility is included on Track, Manage and Grow plans from $41/mo per location: 20 prompts, three engines, no export yet. When it is enough and when Promptwatch fits better.
BrightLocal Local AI Visibility is a module inside BrightLocal's local SEO platform, next to the rank tracker, citation tools and review management. It asks ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews up to 20 questions per location, anchors each query to that location, and scores the location from 0 to 100 against the local competitors the AI actually recommends.
For a BrightLocal customer it costs nothing extra. That changes the buying question from "is it worth the money?" to "is it enough?" We read brightlocal.com/pricing, the module page, llms.txt and the help center articles on plans, metrics, prompts, scheduling and export on 20 October 2026.
What it is and who it is for
You set up a location and up to 20 prompts, which BrightLocal suggests from the business category and you can edit. Each prompt is tagged branded or unbranded and gets its own score, mention rate, share of voice and average position. Competitors are detected automatically, with an AI explanation of why each one outranks you. An AI sources leaderboard shows which directories the engines cite for your category and whether your location is listed on each.
The visibility score combines how often the location is mentioned, where it appears, how positively it is described and how strongly it is recommended. BrightLocal reads above 75 as consistent recommendation and below 50 as mostly absent. The first run is a snapshot. From the second run you get a trend view.
The fit is a single location or small group already on BrightLocal for rankings and citations.
What you get per plan
The module is included on Track, Manage and Grow. Prices for one location, read on 20 October 2026:
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | Adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Track | $41/mo | $369/yr ($31/mo) | Local AI Visibility, rank tracking, geo-grid, citation tracking, GBP audit |
| Manage | $54/mo | $485/yr ($40/mo) | AI Insights, listings sync, GBP post scheduling |
| Grow | $65/mo | $584/yr ($49/mo) | Review monitoring, generation and widgets |
Prices rise by location band up to 100 locations; Track for 2 to 5 locations is $62 a month. Above 100 locations pricing is on request, and the help center says custom plans do not include Local AI Visibility automatically. The 14-day trial needs no card.
Note that the $31 headline is the annual rate. One location on monthly billing is $41.
What works
Scoring each location against its own local competitors is the right model for local search. A dentist in Leeds is not competing with a dentist in Bristol, and a brand-wide average would hide that.
The link to fixes is the other strength. When the sources leaderboard shows a directory where competitors are listed and you are not, you can send that gap straight to BrightLocal's pay-as-you-go Citation Builder from the same account. Few AI trackers connect a finding to an action this directly.
What to check before paying
You are not paying extra, but you are still committing a reporting process to it. Check these first:
- Three engines only. Gemini, Perplexity and Claude are not tracked yet. BrightLocal says it plans to add more.
- A hard cap of 20 prompts per location, with no way to buy more. You can edit or swap prompts at any time.
- Export and white-label are on the roadmap, not live. An agency has to show results inside BrightLocal.
- It is not on legacy plans (Single Business, Multi Business, SEO Pro, Simply Listings) and only exists on BrightLocal's new platform.
- Runs are weekly, monthly or on demand, and a manual refresh uses one manual report run.
The comparison table on the landing page rates BrightLocal against Local Falcon, Search Atlas and Semrush. That is vendor material.
Where it falls short against a full AI visibility platform
The module measures answers on three engines. The pages we read do not describe AI crawler logs or AI-referred traffic tracking, so what happens after an answer is outside its scope. You cannot see whether a ChatGPT recommendation sent anyone to the booking page. A business that also sells outside its map radius, or an agency that needs exportable client reports, will outgrow 20 prompts and an in-app view quickly.
When Promptwatch is the better buy
Promptwatch is the better buy once local is one part of a wider program, or once you need proof of results. Its Professional plan at $245 a month adds state and city tracking to the country-level tracking every plan includes, so prompts can be measured for the cities you serve. It runs 150 prompts across two projects with daily refresh, on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, Copilot and more, plus Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.
The part BrightLocal leaves out is covered too. Agent Analytics logs which AI crawlers fetched your location pages, with 25M crawler logs on Professional. Visitor analytics tracks AI-referred sessions and conversions through a script or GTM template. Citation analytics shows the pages, domains, Reddit threads and YouTube videos behind each answer, which is a wider source view than a directory leaderboard.
For agencies with many local clients, the Kick-off plan at $199 a month includes unlimited projects and prompts, 10 seats and state and city tracking.
Verdict
For an existing BrightLocal customer, switch it on. It costs nothing, it scores each location against the competitors AI names locally, and a citation gap can go straight into Citation Builder. As a standalone AI visibility program it is thin: three engines, 20 prompts and no export. When you need more engines, city-level tracking at scale, crawler logs and AI-referred conversions, Promptwatch Professional, or Kick-off for agencies, is the step up.
