First Answer vs AthenaHQ (2026): Flat-fee action plans or a credit-billed task queue?
First Answer bills a flat $135/mo for 50 prompts on two engines. AthenaHQ has a free tier, Starter at $295/mo and credit-based usage. How to choose, and why Promptwatch belongs on the shortlist.
Both of these tools promise the same thing: you open the dashboard and it tells you what to fix. First Answer calls the output an action plan. AthenaHQ calls it the Action Center. Where they differ is how you pay for the monitoring underneath, and how technical the recommended fixes get.
First Answer is a flat monthly fee with a fixed response allowance. AthenaHQ bills in credits, one per AI response, so your bill moves with the number of prompts, engines and checks you run. If finance wants a predictable number, that difference may decide the purchase before any feature does. We include Promptwatch in the table as the benchmark, since it also turns data into tasks and is priced on prompts and responses.

First Answer: strengths and limits
First Answer keeps the job small. It tracks your prompts daily, scores mention rate, share of voice, answer position and sentiment, and lists the sources engines cite. The action plans are concrete: write about a topic where AI answers don't link to you, or improve a page that is cited but buried. Essential includes one AI-generated content piece a month, Pro two.
The Brazilian team (CEO Johanna Goulart, CTO Rodrigo Beckmann) offers support in Portuguese as well as English. It also lists AI traffic and crawler logs as a feature, which AthenaHQ doesn't.
The limits are coverage and scale. Essential's 50 prompts run on ChatGPT and Gemini only. Pro at $370 adds three more models, although the pricing page names a different fifth model in two places (Grok on the card, Copilot in the FAQ). Claude and AI Mode are Enterprise only. Every self-serve plan is one brand. The crawler-log feature isn't documented in detail: no named bots, no crawl-to-citation path, nothing on conversions.
AthenaHQ: strengths and limits
AthenaHQ is the more capable optimization product. Its founders come from Google Search and DeepMind, and it rolls citations, sentiment, traffic impact and query types into one GEO score. The Action Center turns that score into work someone can be assigned: generate this schema block, reformat that section, fix LLM metadata. Schema and entity tagging can run automatically at scale. Starter includes API access and unlimited seats with role-based access, and revenue attribution connects to GA4, Shopify and Webflow.
The credit model is the part to plan around. Fifty prompts on nine engines checked daily is 450 responses a day. At roughly eight cents a credit, that is about $36 of usage per day, so ask how many credits Starter includes before you size the prompt list. Add-on packs run about $100 per 1,250 credits. Starter covers a single country, and personas, multi-region tracking and the ACE Citation Engine sit on Enterprise, reported at around $2,000 a month or more. Recommendations still need editing before they ship, and AthenaHQ offers no Reddit monitoring or crawler analytics.
Who wins for which buyer
AthenaHQ wins for a single-market team with someone who can implement schema and restructure pages. It covers far more engines on its first paid plan, has a free tier to test with, attributes revenue through common stacks, and doesn't charge per seat.
First Answer wins for a team that wants the bill fixed in advance and a short list of content fixes rather than technical tickets. It also suits Portuguese-speaking brands and anyone who wants crawler data listed in the product, even if it is lightly documented.
Where Promptwatch fits
Promptwatch bills like First Answer and goes past both on measurement. Plans are priced on prompts and responses, and Essential at $95 runs 50 prompts across all tracked LLMs. Unified Actions gives you an AI-generated to-do list in the style of AthenaHQ's queue.
The gap both rivals leave is the crawler. On Professional at $245 a month, Agent Analytics logs ChatGPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, GoogleOther and Meta AI crawler visits, flags errors and traces crawl-to-citation paths. Citation analytics covers Reddit and YouTube, where AthenaHQ has no monitoring. Personas and state or city tracking come without an Enterprise contract. Visitor analytics ties AI-referred sessions to conversions through a script or GTM template on any site. Content Agents write the pages and publish them to Webflow or Framer after review.
Billed monthly, Professional costs less than AthenaHQ Starter and less than First Answer Pro.
Verdict
Of the two, AthenaHQ suits teams that can ship technical fixes themselves and don't mind keeping an eye on credits. First Answer is the calmer, flat-fee choice for a small team, especially one working in Portuguese. Our pick is to start with Promptwatch: a task list like AthenaHQ's, billing as predictable as First Answer's, pages that publish to your CMS, and crawler and conversion data that tell you whether the work paid off.
FAQ
Is AthenaHQ more expensive than First Answer?
On sticker price, yes: $295 a month against $135. AthenaHQ has a free tier, though, and its real cost depends on how many credits your prompts use.
Is Promptwatch a better buy than First Answer or AthenaHQ?
For most teams it is worth evaluating first. Its Essential plan is cheaper than both rivals' first paid plans and covers every tracked engine, and Professional adds the crawler and conversion data neither publishes.
