Google AI Features Search Content Guidance: AI Overviews Documentation

A walkthrough of Google's AI features and AI Overviews documentation: eligibility, query fan-out, what to ignore, and how Search Console reports generative impressions.

Google's AI features search content guidance lives in Search Central, not on a vendor blog. The two pages that matter are AI features and your website (how AI Overviews and AI Mode treat your pages) and Optimizing your website for generative AI features (what to do, and what to stop doing). The AI Overviews documentation is not a ranking-factor PDF. It is eligibility, retrieval, and a short list of hacks Google says do not work.

This post restates that documentation, then marks the hole it leaves: Search Console still cannot tell you whether ChatGPT or Perplexity used you. For that, we send people to Promptwatch.

What the AI features documentation actually says

AI Overviews appear when Google decides they add something beyond classic results. They often do not trigger. AI Mode is the longer, exploratory surface for comparisons and multi-step questions. Both may use query fan-out: extra related searches that pull more supporting pages than a single classic query. Google's own example in the optimization guide starts from "how to fix a lawn that's full of weeds" and fans out into herbicides, chemical-free removal, and prevention. The page that wins a supporting link might match a fan-out, not the words the user typed.

Overviews and AI Mode can use different models, so the links will not always match. Google also says Overviews were built to send people to a wider set of sites on complex questions, and that clicks from pages with Overviews have been higher quality in the sense that people stay longer. That is Google's claim, not a CTR table we invented.

Eligibility, from the AI features page, is blunt. To show as a supporting link you must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. There are no additional technical requirements.

Search content guidance Google wants you to follow

The AI features page repeats ordinary SEO:

  • Allow crawling in robots.txt and at the CDN
  • Internal links so the page is findable
  • Page experience
  • Important content in text, not only in images or video
  • Images and video that support the text, when they make sense
  • Structured data that matches visible text
  • Current Merchant Center and Business Profile data if those products apply

The optimization guide adds editorial rules. Prefer a unique point of view over a summary of other summaries. Prefer non-commodity pages (their contrast is generic "tips for first-time homebuyers" vs a first-hand sewer-line story). Organize with headings people can scan. If you use generative tools to write, the result still has to meet Search Essentials and spam policies. Do not manufacture a URL for every fan-out variation; that can be scaled content abuse.

People-first writing is still the helpful content system. There is no separate "AI Overviews writing voice."

What the documentation tells you to ignore

Google collected the folklore and told you to skip it for Google Search:

TacticGoogle's position
llms.txt and special AI markupSearch does not use them
Chunking articles into tiny passagesNot required; systems can extract from a normal page
Rewriting for every long-tail / fan-out phrasingIneffective; can look like scaled content
Inauthentic mentionsCore ranking plus spam systems still apply
Special schema for OverviewsNot required. Keep schema for rich results, matched to visible text

If a slide deck is selling you those as "2026 AI Overviews optimization," it is selling against Search Central.

How Google says to measure (and what GSC still hides)

In June 2026 Google launched generative AI performance reports in Search Console: impressions in generative AI features on Search (AI Overviews, AI Mode) and Discover, plus pages, countries, devices (Search), and dates. That data also sits inside the overall Performance report under the Web search type.

What the launch post does not give you: the prompt that triggered the Overview, the competing URLs in the same answer, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Gemini-the-app.

Preview controls still work the usual way. robots.txt for Googlebot is the crawl control. nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, and noindex limit how much of a page can show. Google-Extended is a different lever (training and grounding in some other Google systems), not the Overview inclusion switch. If you change preview controls, use URL Inspection and wait for recrawl; Google says that can take days to months.

After you have read the docs

Do the Google homework. Then put the same buyer questions on a tracker that stores the answer, not only an impression.

Promptwatch monitors Google AI Overviews and AI Mode alongside ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity, from real UIs, daily on paid plans. Query fan-outs in the product are the prompt-level version of the technique Google described. Citation analytics name the URL that got used. Essential is $95/mo for that monitoring. Agent Analytics shows whether GoogleOther and other AI crawlers fetched the page, but crawler logs start on Professional at $245/mo with a 25M allowance. Explore is free and ChatGPT-only. Review: Promptwatch. Site: promptwatch.com.

GSC remains the system of record for Google impressions. Promptwatch is the system of record for "did this prompt cite us, on this engine, this week." Buy both. Do not use one to fake the other.

FAQ

Is there special markup to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google's AI Overviews documentation says indexed and snippet-eligible. Structured data helps rich results when it matches the page. It is not an Overview ticket.

Does Google use query fan-out?

Yes. Both the AI features page and the optimization guide describe it. That is why a supporting link can match a related sub-question instead of the original query.

Use snippet and index controls as documented. Blocking Googlebot in robots.txt takes you out of Search, including AI features. Google-Extended is not a surgical Overview off-switch.

Will following this guidance get me cited in ChatGPT?

It will keep you eligible on Google. ChatGPT is a different crawler and a different answer. Measure it separately.

What to do this week

  1. Read the AI features page and the optimization guide end to end. They are short.
  2. Confirm money URLs are indexed, snippet-eligible, and not nosnippet by accident.
  3. Open GSC generative AI reports. Note pages that appear and queries you still cannot see.
  4. Load those buyer questions into Promptwatch so Overview-adjacent prompts are stored with ChatGPT and Perplexity rows.
  5. Delete any "Overview ranking factors" checklist that contradicts Search Central.
