Google Search Console AI Overviews SEO Guidance, Structured Data, Bing Webmaster Tools, and IndexNow
GSC generative impressions, Google schema rules, Bing AI Performance, IndexNow pings. Four official pipes. Promptwatch for ChatGPT and Perplexity.
Google Search Console, structured data, Bing Webmaster Tools, and IndexNow is a four-pipe official stack. Do not flatten them into one "AI SEO" number. Each pipe answers a different question. Mixing them is how a Bing citation gets reported as an Overview win, or how an IndexNow ping gets reported as a mention. The four pipes come from three vendors, they measure different surfaces, and they update on different cadences. Treating them as one number is the fastest way to produce a dashboard that nobody can defend in a QBR.
GSC generative reports (June 2026) show impressions in Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover. Pages, countries, devices, dates. Not clicks in the launch list. Not the prompt. The report tells you how many times a generative surface showed your page, broken down by the dimensions Google chose. It does not tell you the sentence the model produced, and it does not tell you which other URLs appeared next to yours. That is by design: Google ships an impression count, not an answer log.
Structured data: Google's optimization guide says it is not required for generative AI search and there is no special Overview type. Keep it for rich results, matched to visible text. The guide is explicit, and the explicit part matters because a lot of GEO folklore still talks about "Overview schema" as if it were a thing. It is not a thing. Structured data still earns rich results, and rich results still matter, but the connection to Overviews is not a schema you can add.
Bing Webmaster AI Performance covers Copilot and Bing AI summaries, citations, and grounding queries (sampled phrases). Not ChatGPT. Bing's surface is Copilot and Bing's own AI summaries, which is a different product from ChatGPT even though both come from Microsoft's orbit. The grounding queries are sampled phrases, not a full prompt log.
IndexNow (indexnow.org) pings participating engines when URLs change. Bing's post ties it to fresher AI citations. It is not a mention ledger. It helps discovery. Eligibility for Overviews is still snippet indexing. A ping tells a search engine "this URL changed," and the engine decides what to do with that signal. It does not create a mention, and it does not create a citation.
Promptwatch paid plans store the prompt on Overviews, Copilot, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. Essential is $95/mo. Two official UIs (GSC and Bing) plus Promptwatch as the third for prompts you typed. Method: how we rank. Site: promptwatch.com. The third pipe exists because the two official UIs do not store the prompt, and the prompt is the unit of work when a buyer asks "did the model name us."
Label each number by pipe
GSC generative impressions are Google's volume for Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover. They will not tell you the sentence. They will not give you ChatGPT. If the launch list did not include clicks, do not invent a CTR story from that report. The temptation is to divide impressions by something and call it a click rate. The report does not support that math, and the announcement is clear about what is and is not in it.
Schema that matches the visible page still helps rich results. Schema that exists only to "unlock Overviews" is folklore. Audit markup against what a human can read. Drop types you do not show. If the page lists a recipe, recipe schema is honest. If the page is a landing page with recipe schema bolted on, the schema is lying, and the right move is to remove it.
Bing AI Performance is Copilot and Bing summaries. Grounding queries are sampled phrases, useful and incomplete. They are not a ChatGPT log. A Copilot citation in Bing's UI is not an Overview impression and not a Perplexity footnote. The three are different surfaces, and a number from one should not be presented as a number from another.
IndexNow is a ping. Enable it if you change URLs and want participating engines to hear sooner. Bing connects that freshness to AI citations. You still need to be indexable as a snippet before Google will consider you for an Overview. A ping is not a mention. The ping is the cheapest of the four pipes to enable, and also the easiest to overstate.
The third UI is the prompt list
GSC and Bing are two official UIs. Promptwatch is the third for the wording you typed: Overviews at prompt level, Copilot, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude. Essential at $95/mo is that program. Load buyer prompts. Keep the official reports. Label every number by pipe on the first slide so finance cannot average them. The labeling is the discipline that keeps the stack honest: a GSC impression, a Bing citation, and a Promptwatch mention are three different measurements of three different surfaces, and they belong in three different columns.
FAQ
Does IndexNow get us into Overviews?
It helps discovery. Eligibility is still snippet indexing. A ping without a snippet-worthy page does not create an Overview.
One dashboard for GSC and Bing?
Two official UIs. Promptwatch is the third for prompts you typed. Do not wait for Google and Bing to share a login.
Is schema required for generative search?
Google's optimization guide says no, and there is no special Overview type. Keep structured data for rich results, matched to visible text.
What to do this week
- Open GSC generative reports and Bing AI Performance. Export one week. Write the surface name on each column.
- Audit schema against visible text. Remove or fix types that do not match the page.
- Enable IndexNow. Ping when URLs change. Do not call the ping a mention count.
- Load buyer prompts into Promptwatch. Overviews, Copilot, ChatGPT, Perplexity as the brief requires.
- Label each number by pipe. GSC impressions, Bing citations, prompt mentions. Three headings.
