How to Check If I Show Up in AI Overviews (2026 Guide)

A 2026 checklist: Search generative AI control, the GSC generative report (impressions, not a click column), a manual SERP check, then prompt-level tracking Google will not store.

Checking AI Overview visibility is a Google job first. ChatGPT is a different surface. If you skip Search Console and paste a question into an assistant, you measured the wrong product.

This 2026 guide follows pages Google actually published: AI features and your website, the optimization guide for generative AI features, the June 3, 2026 generative AI performance reports, plus Search Console Help for the generative AI performance report and the Search generative AI control. Then it covers the hole those pages leave: which query produced the Overview.

1. Confirm you are even eligible

You cannot "check" a surface you opted out of.

In Search Console, open Settings, then Search generative AI. The default is include: links and content can appear in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative features in Discover. Exclude means you will not get traffic or impressions from those features. Google says the control is not a ranking signal for the rest of Search, and it is not an AI-training toggle. Training limits for those models are Google-Extended. Blocking Search entirely is noindex.

The control is still rolling out to a subset of properties. If you do not see it, you cannot conclude you were excluded. Child properties inherit the parent unless an owner overrides them.

The optimization guide also says a site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible. Indexed and snippet-eligible is the other bar. There is no extra AI-only technical requirement on the AI features page.

2. Open the generative AI performance report

Google's dedicated report, announced June 3, 2026, is impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode (Search Labs experiments are out). It is rolling out. Help lists reasons you might not see it: too few generative impressions, you excluded the site, or your property is not in the rollout yet.

What the report actually groups: dates (Pacific Time), pages (canonical URL after redirects), countries, devices. The chart is property-level: two links from your site in one generative feature count as one impression in the total. Newest points can be preliminary (dotted line). Export exists. Values shown as ~ or - become zeros in the download.

Clicks are not in that dedicated report's column list. Do not invent a CTR from it. Overview clicks can still land in the overall Performance report (Web search type). Google's impressions and clicks help says a click on an external link in an AI Overview counts as a click, and the link must be scrolled or expanded into view to count as an impression. Those are two UIs. Keep them straight.

A logging error hit generative Search impression data for August 13-17, 2026. If that week looks dead, check Search Console's anomaly notes before you rewrite the site.

3. Do a short manual SERP check anyway

GSC will not tell you the query. Pick ten buyer questions you already rank for in classic Search. Search them logged out, same country you care about. Note whether an Overview fired (Google says they often do not), whether your URL is a supporting link, and whether a competitor or a Google property took the slot.

Fan-out matters. The optimization guide's example query "how to fix a lawn that's full of weeds" can fan out into herbicides, non-chemical removal, and prevention. Your URL can support a fan-out, not the string you typed. A miss on the original query is not proof you never appear.

4. What Google will not store

The prompt text. Competing URLs in the same module. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini-the-app. City-level assistant answers.

Promptwatch is the row we use for that prompt layer, including Overviews on paid plans, read from product UIs. Import GSC queries into Prompt Explorer, promote the ones that match money, then watch mention versus citation over time. Explore is free with 10 ChatGPT prompts and is not an Overviews program. Essential is $95/mo with country-level targeting and no listed crawler-log allowance. State and city targeting plus Agent Analytics crawler logs start on Professional at $245/mo. Agent Analytics covers ChatGPTBot and similar AI crawlers. It is not a replacement for Googlebot in GSC.

A one-hour sequence

  1. Search generative AI control = include.
  2. URL Inspection on the money URL: indexed, snippet allowed, important copy in the HTML Googlebot received.
  3. Generative report: pages with impressions this month.
  4. Ten live searches. Screenshot the Overview, not your feelings.
  5. Same ten strings in a prompt tracker if ChatGPT is in the pitch too.

If the generative report is empty and the live SERP never fires an Overview, you do not have a GEO crisis. You have a query set that Google is not decorating. If the Overview fires and you are absent while GSC shows zero generative impressions, check the control, nosnippet / noindex, and whether the link was below the fold. Then stop guessing.
