How to Rank in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode (2026 Data Guide)
AI Mode cites google.com for 7.31% of its sources; AI Overviews cites it for 2.30%. They're not the same engine. Here's what Promptwatch's citation-share data says about winning both.
Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode get treated as one thing in most GEO advice. Promptwatch's June 2026 citation-share data says otherwise: they cite Google's own properties at different rates, favor different content formats, and reward different LinkedIn content. Google is not one engine to optimize for, it's at least two, plus classic Search.
AI Mode routes to Google itself far more than AI Overviews does
Google AI Mode's June 2026 data shows google.com at 7.31% of all citations, more than YouTube (2.88%) and Reddit (2.52%) combined, and up from 4.24% in May, a 72% jump on top of the previous month's sixfold increase. Add YouTube and Google-owned properties take over 10% of AI Mode's citation mix. Below the top three, everything drops under 1%.
Google AI Overview's June 2026 data shows a smaller but still-growing version of the same behavior: YouTube leads at 4.16%, Reddit at 2.72%, and google.com at 2.30%, up sixfold from just 0.37% in January. Together the top three now hold over 9% of AI Overview citations, roughly double their combined January share.
| Metric | Google AI Mode (June 2026) | Google AI Overviews (June 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| google.com share | 7.31% (up from 4.24% in May) | 2.30% (up from 1.15% in May; 0.37% in Jan) |
| YouTube share | 2.88% (down from 3.42%) | 4.16% (up, YTD high) |
| Reddit share | 2.52% (up from 2.36%) | 2.72% (up from 2.52%) |
| Self-citation total | 10%+ (google.com + YouTube) | ~6.5% (google.com + YouTube) |
| Everything else | No independent site clears 1% | Longer tail than AI Mode |
That self-preference has no equivalent in ChatGPT's citation mix, where Reddit leads and google.com barely registers. AI Mode in particular routinely resolves questions with Google's own Maps listings, Business Profiles, and support content before reaching for the open web.
What to do with this:
- Prioritize the whole Google ecosystem, not just the SERP. With YouTube and google.com together taking 10%+ of AI Mode citations and climbing, a maintained YouTube channel, Google Business Profile, Merchant Center feed, and current Help/support content are now direct GEO assets, not side projects.
- Since no independent website clears 1% on AI Mode, compete on precision: publish tightly scoped pages that fully answer one question each, and track monthly whether AI Mode starts pulling them into its fan-out.
- Treat Reddit (2.5 to 2.7% on both surfaces) as a research tool as much as a citation channel, the threads Google cites reveal exactly which questions your prospects ask.
Product pages are catching up to listicles here too
AI Overviews' July 2026 citation-type data shows listicles still leading the monthly average at 18% (down from ~26% in Q1), with product pages at 16.3% (up from ~9% in January) and how-tos steady near 15%. But the trend line matters more than the average: from July 28 onward, product pages were the most-cited format every single day, ending the month at 17.9% versus 16.2% for listicles. Video climbed from ~2.7% in January to nearly 6.3% by late July.
This mirrors the same shift already fully underway on ChatGPT, where product pages hit 32.8% in July. Google is later and slower, but moving the same direction, AI search as a whole is warming to brand-owned commercial pages over third-party roundups.
What to do with this:
- Give product pages the same AI Overviews attention you give editorial content, structured specs, clear pricing, and fresh availability data now earn citations directly.
- Keep list-format content in the pipeline, but don't build a strategy around it as your only lever; its lead is shrinking for the first time since Promptwatch started tracking it.
- Invest in video. At nearly 6.3% of citations and rising, and with most brands still having no video competing for those slots, this is one of the least-contested formats available on AI Overviews right now.
AI Mode and AI Overviews want different LinkedIn content
Promptwatch's LinkedIn citation breakdown shows both Google surfaces are article-hungry, but not identically: AI Mode cites LinkedIn Pulse articles for 44.85% of its LinkedIn citations (posts a distant second at 27.37%), while AI Overviews cites Pulse articles at 42.25% and gives meaningful weight to LinkedIn's own curated "top content" pages (8.14%), a category AI Mode barely touches. Both surfaces cited the LinkedIn homepage 0% of the time; neither rewards a static brand page the way ChatGPT does.
What to do with this:
- Publish substantive Pulse articles on the questions your buyers ask Google, no other LinkedIn format comes close on either surface.
- Structure articles for extraction: a question-style headline, a direct answer up front, scannable subheadings.
- For AI Overviews specifically, aim for LinkedIn's aggregated "top content" surfaces by posting consistently on one theme; that traffic goes to accounts LinkedIn itself ranks as leading voices on a topic.
Ten citation slots make Overviews the more forgiving engine
Promptwatch's citation-count data puts Google AI Overviews at roughly ten sources per answer, about double ChatGPT's five, and notably steady over time. Twice the slots means twice the brands that can surface for any given query, which makes AI Overviews the more realistic first AI citation for newer or mid-authority domains. Content that narrowly misses ChatGPT's shortlist can still make Google's longer list, measure your AI Overviews citations separately rather than assuming one engine predicts the other.
The official technical bar hasn't changed
None of the above adds a hidden ranking factor. Google has been consistent: its AI features documentation states plainly that if a page can appear as a search result with a snippet, it can be used in AI Overviews and AI Mode, there's no separate index to apply to. Structured data still has to match visible text; invisible FAQ or HowTo markup is a mismatch, not a lever. We cover the full official-guidance checklist (Googlebot access, the June 2026 generative performance reports, IndexNow for Bing) in Best Strategies to Show Up in AI Search Results, read that alongside this post for the compliance layer underneath the citation-share tactics above.
FAQ
Are AI Overviews and AI Mode really different enough to need separate tactics?
Yes. AI Mode's self-citation rate (10%+ to Google's own properties, led by a 7.31% google.com share) is meaningfully higher than AI Overviews' (~6.5%), and their preferred LinkedIn content formats diverge too. Treat them as related but distinct surfaces.
Why is Google citing itself more every month?
The data doesn't say why, only that it's accelerating, google.com's AI Mode share grew 72% in a single month on top of a prior sixfold jump. The practical response is the same regardless of cause: make sure your Google-owned surfaces (Business Profile, Maps, Merchant Center, YouTube) are complete and current, since that's increasingly where the citation goes instead of to an independent site.
Is AI Overviews easier to get cited in than ChatGPT?
The citation math favors it, roughly ten slots versus ChatGPT's five, but Google's growing self-citation rate eats into the slots available to outside domains. Both dynamics matter.
Does schema or FAQ markup get me into AI Overviews?
Only as a clearer representation of content that's already visible on the page. Google's official guidance treats mismatched or invisible schema as a red flag, not a shortcut.
