How to Track ChatGPT Ads Targeting a Specific Industry: OpenAI Ads Advertiser Targeting and Reporting 2026

OpenAI's ad platform has no industry targeting field. Here is what advertisers can actually target, what Ads Manager reports, and how to track every ChatGPT ad in your own industry.

People search for "ChatGPT ads targeting a specific industry" with two different jobs in mind. Some are advertisers who want to reach buyers in a vertical. Others want to watch which brands are advertising in their vertical. OpenAI's tools serve the first job. They do not serve the second. This guide covers both, starting with what OpenAI actually lets advertisers do, because that shapes what you will see when you start tracking.

There is no industry dropdown

OpenAI's campaign settings are documented in its help center and developer docs. A campaign holds an objective, a budget, start and end dates, the countries to target, optional platforms, and optional custom audiences to include or exclude (Create Campaigns for ChatGPT Ads). There is no field for industry, job title, or company size.

What exists instead:

  • Location. Countries by code, plus regions through location IDs. You can target a country and exclude a region inside it (targeting docs).
  • Platform. Three groups: the iOS app, the Android app, and web (which includes mobile browsers).
  • Custom audiences. Uploaded customer or prospect lists (email, phone, hashed variants, mobile ad IDs). Inclusion and bid multipliers need at least 25,000 matched users. Exclusion lists have no minimum.
  • Context hints. Set per ad group, up to 2,000 of them. They describe the conversations, topics, or use cases where your product is relevant. OpenAI is explicit that hints are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery in specific conversations (Ads in ChatGPT: The Basics).

So "industry targeting" on ChatGPT is something you build out of context hints, landing page, and copy. The ad system then matches on the context and intent of the current conversation, plus personalization signals when the user has them turned on. Industry is inferred from the conversation, not selected from a list.

Your industry may not be eligible yet

Before you plan a vertical campaign, read the ad policies. OpenAI says the early phases focus on household and consumer goods, local services, travel and entertainment, and digital products and education. Financial services, health services, and legal services are restricted: in the US, approved advertisers may be allowed case by case, and outside the US those categories are generally prohibited. Political ads are not allowed. Individual job listings and housing listings are prohibited.

This is also useful for trackers. If you sell in a restricted category, a quiet ad slot on your prompts may simply reflect policy, not a lack of competitor interest.

What OpenAI reports to advertisers

Ads Manager Beta reports impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC, average CPM, and conversions. Impressions, clicks, and CTR refresh about every 15 minutes. Spend can lag seven to eight hours. You can also add UTM parameters to landing page URLs, and they persist on ad clicks (The Basics).

The developer docs add detail for teams pulling data through the API. Conversion reports default to a 30-day click window and a 1-day view window. Click windows can be 7, 14, or 30 days. Reports can be segmented by country or device (reporting docs).

Two limits matter for anyone thinking in industries:

  1. No benchmarks. OpenAI's advertiser FAQ says ChatGPT Ads "does not yet have performance benchmarks across advertisers, industries, or campaign types" (FAQ). There is no industry CTR to compare against.
  2. Your campaigns only. Advertisers receive aggregated data about how their own ads perform. None of these pages describe a view of other advertisers in your category.

How to track every ChatGPT ad in your industry

If you want to know who is advertising in your vertical, you have to observe the answers yourself. Here is the checklist we use.

1. Build an industry prompt set. Write the questions your buyers ask, in their words. Weight it toward commercial intent: "best accounting software for contractors," "X vs Y," "cheapest Z near me." Ads concentrate there. Promptwatch's ad frequency report found ads on 20.1% of search-backed ChatGPT responses over the 90 days to mid-August 2026, but your industry's rate will differ, so measure it on your own prompts.

2. Tag prompts by sub-vertical. Group prompts into topics (for a travel brand: flights, hotels, packages, insurance). This turns an ad log into an industry map.

3. Run monitors in the countries you sell in. Campaigns are country-targeted, so a US-only monitor will not show you the UK market.

4. Capture the ads with the prompt attached. This is the part you cannot do by hand at scale. Promptwatch Ads Radar captures each sponsored ad inside ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode answers to your tracked prompts, and records the title, description, image or price, advertiser name and domain, target URL, and the triggering prompt (Ads Radar docs).

5. Read it two ways. The Top advertisers chart tells you who is spending most across your industry prompts. The By Prompt table tells you which questions are being bought, with ad count, latest ad date, and your own average visibility on each prompt. Filter by prompt type and date range to compare sub-verticals.

6. Read the creatives. Ad copy shows how a competitor positions itself for a question, often more bluntly than its website does.

Which tool, which plan

Promptwatch is the pick here because the industry prompt set you build for ads tracking is the same one that tracks your organic mentions and citations. You see, on one row, that a rival is buying the slot under an answer where you are already cited, or where you are absent.

The plan matters. As of 2026-10-21, Promptwatch's llms.txt lists Ads Radar from the Business plan ($579/mo) and on all agency plans (Kick-off $199/mo, Growth $399/mo, Scale $799/mo). Essential and Professional do not include it. Business also adds state and city tracking, which matters if your industry is local services.

Alternatives in our catalog: Gauge lists ChatGPT Ads tracking from $599/mo, and its feature page describes pulling your own OpenAI Ads campaign metrics next to competitor placements. LLM Pulse lists AI ads tracking from €49/mo on a weekly default cadence. Neither publishes crawler logs or conversion-level visitor analytics, which is what tells you whether your organic answer is losing ground for a technical reason.

For your own campaigns, keep using OpenAI Ads Manager. For your industry, you need a monitor.
