No Official ChatGPT Ads API: Why Partnership Claims Are False

OpenAI does not offer a ChatGPT ads API or partnership. Any vendor claiming one, including getmint, is misrepresenting how it gets the data. Here is how ad tracking actually works.

A wave of marketing copy right now claims a "ChatGPT ads API" or an "official ChatGPT ad partnership." None of that exists. OpenAI does not publish a public directory of sponsored placements inside ChatGPT answers, and it does not hand an ad data feed to third party platforms. Any vendor that markets itself as the official ChatGPT ad library, or as having an OpenAI ad integration, is describing a product that does not exist. The data only comes from one place, which is watching the real ChatGPT interface.

This matters because the claim is not a small exaggeration. It changes what you are buying. A tool that watches the UI and stores what it sees is a monitoring product with real limits and real capture gaps. A tool that claims an official feed implies completeness and freshness it cannot have, because the feed does not exist. Those two products are not the same, and the second one is sold on a false premise.

What "official partnership" would even require

For a vendor to have an official ChatGPT ad partnership, OpenAI would need to expose an ads endpoint, grant the vendor access, and publish the terms. None of that has happened. OpenAI's published crawler and publisher documentation covers OAI-SearchBot and referral behavior. It does not cover a sponsored placements API for resellers. If a vendor points to "OpenAI integration" as the source of its ad data, ask for the endpoint. There is not one to point to.

Getmint is one example of the claim pattern. Pitches of that shape, where a platform says it has official access to ChatGPT ad inventory, are false. They are not describing a pipe OpenAI opened. They are describing data collected the same way every honest player collects it, dressed up in language that implies a privilege no one has.

How ad tracking actually works

The honest path is UI monitoring. A tool loads real ChatGPT answers to the prompts you track, the way a person would, and stores the sponsored units it observes. Promptwatch does this. Its sourcing claim is real UI monitoring across the assistants, not an API pipe from the model vendor. That is the only honest way to get this data, and it is the only way any vendor gets it, regardless of what the marketing copy says.

This means the data has the shape of observation, not the shape of a feed. Ads Radar stores each captured ad with the creative, the advertiser name and root domain, the landing page, the source response, and the position of the ad inside that answer. It keeps the prompt string. It can list the prompts whose answers contained sponsored ads, with an ad count and a latest capture time per prompt. It can list advertiser domains ordered by ad count, and pull the top domains with daily counts for a 90 day share of ads trend. None of that comes from OpenAI. All of it comes from watching.

Why the false claim is worse than no claim

A vendor that says "we monitor ChatGPT and log the ads we see" is telling you the truth, including the limits. Captures depend on which prompts you track and how often they run. A vendor that says "we have the official ChatGPT ad API" is hiding those limits behind a privilege it does not have, and you will build plans around a completeness that is not there.

The fix is simple. When a platform pitches ChatGPT ad data, ask how it is collected. "We monitor the UI" is a real answer. "We have an OpenAI partnership" is not, and a vendor that leads with the second is the one to be most careful of.

What you can actually get

Ads Radar is a platform feature inside Promptwatch, not a standalone SKU. The commerce reports it sits beside are on Professional at $245/mo and above, and on the self serve agency plans (Kick-off $199, Growth $399, Scale $799). Essential at $95/mo covers mentions and citations but not the commerce views. Explore is free with 10 ChatGPT prompts. Site: promptwatch.com.

What to do this week

  1. If a vendor pitched you an official ChatGPT ad API, ask for the endpoint name. There is not one.
  2. Replace that claim with the real question: which prompts do you monitor, and how often.
  3. Load your prompt set into Promptwatch on a plan with Ads Radar.
  4. Pull the advertiser domain list and the 90 day share of ads trend.
  5. Treat the data as observation with capture gaps, not as a complete feed.
