Petra Labs alternatives in 2026: run AEO in-house or hire a smaller team
Petra Labs engagements start at $15,000 a month. The in-house platforms and GEO services we'd compare first, ranked, with what each one actually replaces.
Petra Labs sells answer engine optimization as a managed engagement. Its own software builds a custom prompt map for each client from forum scraping (Reddit, LinkedIn), opt-in panel and clickstream data and Google search data, then runs each prompt many times until the results settle. It also captures what Petra calls chain-of-thought data: the fan-out searches and interim sources a model consults before it answers. A team then does the work (copy, technical audits, programmatic AEO, earned media, social) and builds a custom attribution and marketing mix model tied to pipeline.
Petra publishes a real price, which most managed AEO firms don't. Engagements start at $15,000 a month, and typical ones run $250k to $600k+ a year.
Why teams look at alternatives
Cost comes first. At a $180,000 annual minimum, Petra is priced for enterprises that want to outsource the whole function.
Lock-in comes second. Software and services are sold together, so you can't keep the platform and drop the team. The prompt set is built for you, which makes Petra's numbers hard to benchmark against an off-the-shelf tracker, and the site doesn't name the engines it covers. Results on its pages, including a 27x AI search traffic figure, are Petra's own unaudited claims.

The alternatives, ranked
1. Promptwatch
For most teams the realistic alternative to Petra is one or two people in-house running Promptwatch. Business is $579 a month for five projects, 350 prompts, 42,000 responses, 10M visitor events, 100M crawler logs and 30 AEO articles, and annual billing charges 12 months for the price of 10. Enterprise pricing adds SSO and white-label.
The overlap with Petra is larger than the price gap suggests. Prompts include query fan-outs, the sub-searches behind an answer, which covers the fan-out half of Petra's chain-of-thought capture. Citation analytics goes to page, Reddit, YouTube and offsite level. Agent Analytics shows which AI crawlers fetched which pages, and visitor analytics attributes AI-referred sessions and conversions through a script or GTM template. Content Agents plan, write and publish to Webflow or Framer through a review inbox.
It won't do earned media, social management or a custom marketing mix model. Visitor analytics measures the AI-referred traffic you can see, not traffic hiding in direct or dark social. If board-level revenue attribution is the hard requirement, that is where Petra earns its fee.
2. Profound
Profound sits between software and service. Its Enterprise product is sold as marketing agents covering AEO and SEO, content and demand, and PR, with up to 10 engines and a Prompt Volumes dataset of real query demand. Contracts start around $40k a year, well under Petra's floor, but your team runs the program, and setup realistically takes one to three months with a dedicated owner. The public $99 Starter plan is ChatGPT only, so it isn't a real substitute.
3. Previsible
Previsible is the closest like-for-like if you want people rather than software. The San Francisco SEO and GEO agency has about 70 people across 10 countries and offers project work, a 12-month retainer built on two-week sprints, and multi-year dedicated teams. Rates aren't published, and you'd pair it with a platform for measurement.
4. GetCito
GetCito is the budget version of Petra's model. Growth is $599 a month for 50 prompts a day across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews, five human-written articles, and time from a strategist, writer and community manager. Scale is $999 for 100 prompts and 10 articles. A free, MIT-licensed self-host tracker covers ChatGPT and AI Overviews. Claude, Copilot and AI Mode are Enterprise only.
5. Citeme
Citeme fits EU teams. The Paris agency sells a 59 € a month dashboard and three team plans from 690 € to 2,590 € a month excluding VAT, covering GEO content, schema, on-page edits, Reddit work and digital PR. Its plan sheets disagree with one another, so get the scope in writing.
Two other services in our catalog serve different buyers. OneLittleWeb is a link-building agency that also sells GEO retainers, and Aibevolen measures AI recommendations for Dutch local businesses.
How to choose
Work out what you're actually short of. If it's headcount, Previsible, GetCito or Citeme do hands-on work for less than Petra. If it's data and a way to act on it, software run by your own team covers most of what Petra's platform reports for a few hundred dollars a month.
Plenty of teams end up with both: an agency for content and PR, and Promptwatch as the measurement layer that shows whether the agency's work moved citations and AI-referred conversions. If you need a custom MMM to justify the spend, Petra is still worth a call.
FAQ
How much does Petra Labs cost?

Outside local SMEs, GetCito Growth at $599 a month and Citeme's 690 € team plan.
