Reddit in Google Rankings and AI Overviews: What Semrush and SISTRIX Data Show
Reddit ranks for about 166 million keywords and is cited in roughly 46% of the AI Overview keywords it ranks for, per Semrush. SISTRIX shows its visibility peaked. Here is how to read both.
Reddit is no longer just a place people search for answers. It is one of the most visible sites in Google itself, and it feeds AI answers on top of that. Two long-running datasets, Semrush and SISTRIX, let us put numbers on both sides.
The Semrush numbers
A Search Engine Land piece on using Reddit for keyword research summarised Semrush data as of August:
- reddit.com ranks for roughly 166 million keywords.
- More than 10 million of those are at position one, 31 million in the top three, and 65 million on page one.
- More than 35 million of those keywords trigger an AI Overview, and Reddit is cited in more than 15 million of them, about a 46% citation rate.
- Estimated organic traffic is around 440 million monthly visits.
That 46% is not "Reddit is cited in 46% of all AI Overviews". It is the share of AI Overview keywords where Reddit already ranks that also cite it. Keep that distinction in any article you write, because the looser version gets repeated a lot.
The SISTRIX view
SISTRIX publishes a Reddit domain analysis that adds two useful corrections.
First, Reddit's Google visibility appears to have peaked. It is the fourth most visible domain in the US (fifth in the UK), but the trend is marked as strongly negative after the high seen in October 2025. Over 60% of its US rankings sit in the top ten, but only 16% in the top three.
Second, the AI Overview exposure is large. SISTRIX puts 54% of Reddit's US ranking keywords in front of an AI Overview (46% in the UK). Its broader data shows an AI Overview at the top of a results page cutting the click rate of position one by 60%, and the top-ten average by 42%. SISTRIX also counts about 8.72 million chatbot citations for Reddit.
So Reddit ranks for a huge number of queries, but a large slice of them now have an AI answer sitting above the blue links.
Different engines, different Reddit
Google is not the whole picture. Ahrefs Brand Radar figures, quoted by Search Engine Journal, put Reddit citations at 5.8 million in AI Overviews, 1.3 million in ChatGPT, 477,000 in Gemini and 202,000 in Copilot.
Semrush's own AI visibility study found ChatGPT leaned on Reddit heavily in regulated and expert-heavy topics. In finance, ChatGPT cited Reddit about 1.77 times per prompt, where Google AI Mode favoured comparison sites like Bankrate and NerdWallet. The same study showed Reddit citation counts above one per prompt in business services, technology and consumer electronics.
The spread between engines matters more than any single figure. Third-party trackers disagree widely on Reddit's share of ChatGPT or Gemini citations, because query sets and counting methods differ. Quote ranges with attribution, and date them.
What this means for a GEO plan
- Check whether Reddit already ranks for your topics. The Semrush method is simple: filter organic keywords in your theme for reddit.com, then filter for SERPs with an AI Overview.
- Read the threads. They show the exact language buyers use, which is also the language AI prompts tend to use.
- Don't spam. Threads that get cited are discussions. Brand-posted promotion gets buried or removed.
- Expect volatility. The Search Engine Land piece notes the Wall Street Journal reported Reddit weighing changes to its Google agreement. Platform deals can move quickly.
Measuring it
Reddit's visibility is hard to watch with classic rank trackers, because the value is in whether AI engines cite specific threads for your prompts. Promptwatch includes a Reddit citations view inside its citation analytics, alongside page-level and domain-level sources, and citation trends show when a platform's share shifts. That is the part the prompt-tracking-only tools do not cover.
When a thread about your category starts getting cited, you want to know which prompt triggered it and which engine, then decide whether to reply, publish a better answer on your own site, or ignore it. Start with Promptwatch and pull your Reddit citations first.
