DemandSphere vs Semrush AI Toolkit (2026): Shared budget or per-domain add-on?

DemandSphere splits one daily budget between SERP keywords and LLM prompts. Semrush charges $99/mo per domain for its AI Toolkit. Costs, engines and who should pick which.

DemandSphere and the Semrush AI Toolkit serve the same buyer: an SEO team that wants AI answers on the same report as its rankings. Feature lists overlap more than you'd think. What separates them is how they charge, and with these two the pricing model will shape your bill more than any single feature.

DemandSphere gives you one daily budget and lets you spend it on keywords or prompts. Semrush sells AI tracking per domain and adds a charge for every extra user and prompt pack. We also bring in Promptwatch as a benchmark, because its entry plan happens to cost the same as DemandSphere's monthly Starter and buys something quite different.

DemandSphere: SERP depth, with prompts on the same meter

DemandSphere is a search analytics company that its llms.txt says was founded in Tokyo in 2009. The SERP side is deep, with pixel depth, SERP Rewind and more than 65 feature types. DemandMetrics for GenAI adds brand mentions, citation analytics, sentiment and Chat Rewind, which replays past AI answers. Everything runs daily, even on Starter, and every plan includes unlimited users and domains, the API, and Search Console, GA4 and Slack connections.

The catch is the exchange rate. One prompt costs the same as 10 keywords. Starter's 100 prompts only exist if you track no SEO keywords at all; a more realistic split is 500 keywords and 50 prompts. Pro at $208 a month annually ($250 monthly) gives 2.5 times the budget. The $79 headline also needs annual billing.

The engine count wobbles between pages, from five on the plan cards to "10+ AI engines" on the product page, so budget on the named five. Crawler logs live in Analytics AX, an Enterprise add-on billed for storage ($0.40 per GB of hot storage). Every Get Started button we found led to a demo form.

Semrush AI Toolkit: easiest if Semrush is already open all day

For $99 a month per domain you get visibility tracking across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity, with 25 prompts and one user. The best feature is keyword-to-prompt mapping. Seeing which revenue keywords now resolve to AI answers you're missing from makes prioritization fairly obvious, and nobody who already knows Semrush needs training.

Costs climb fast once you grow. Every domain is another $99, every seat another $99, and every 50 prompts another $60. Two users on one domain with 75 prompts comes to about $258 a month. Getting one domain past 200 prompts takes four prompt packs, roughly $339 a month for 225 prompts and a single seat. A ten-domain agency lands near $1,000.

Methodology is the other question. The tracked "user questions" are AI-generated approximations rather than observed queries, and critics have described the visibility numbers as probabilistic guesswork. Claude, Copilot and DeepSeek sit in the sales-gated Enterprise AIO tier. Adobe completed its acquisition of Semrush in April 2026.

Who should pick which

Pick Semrush if you have one domain that matters, Semrush is already your main tool, and 25 prompts covers what you need. The keyword mapping alone justifies the $99.

Pick DemandSphere if you manage many domains or many people, and Google rankings are still your primary report. At roughly 250 prompts, DemandSphere Pro billed monthly costs $250 with unlimited users, while Semrush costs more for fewer prompts and one seat.

Neither tool ties AI answers to visits, and neither includes crawler logs at the standard tiers.

Where Promptwatch fits

Both products treat AI search as an extra column in an SEO suite. That works until someone asks whether AI answers bring in pipeline.

Promptwatch Essential costs $95 a month, the same as DemandSphere Starter on monthly billing. It has fewer prompts than DemandSphere's prompt-only budget (50 against 100), but they run across every tracked LLM, and the plan includes 6,000 responses and visitor analytics for 200K events. You pick the prompts, and each shows search volume, difficulty and query fan-outs, a better start than a generated question list.

Professional at $245 adds Agent Analytics: real-time crawler logs for ChatGPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others, with crawl-to-citation paths, on a self-serve plan rather than an Enterprise add-on. Citation analytics covers pages, domains, Reddit and YouTube. Content Agents publish GEO pages to Webflow or Framer. For agencies, Kick-off at $199 a month includes unlimited projects and prompts, 10 seats, 10,000 responses and 10M crawler logs, which avoids Semrush's per-domain stacking.

For SERP rankings and backlinks, keep DemandSphere or Semrush.

Verdict

DemandSphere is better value for multi-domain teams. Semrush is the easier add-on for a single domain already in Semrush. For the AI side of the budget, we would start with Promptwatch: crawler logs, citation sources and AI-referred conversions are on its published plans, and the agency pricing doesn't punish you for adding clients.

FAQ

Is DemandSphere cheaper than the Semrush AI Toolkit?

At entry level they're close: $79 to $95 a month for DemandSphere Starter against $99 per domain for Semrush. DemandSphere gets cheaper as you add users and domains, because both are unlimited.

Do DemandSphere or Semrush track AI crawlers?

DemandSphere does through Analytics AX, an Enterprise add-on billed for storage. Semrush doesn't publish crawler tracking for the AI Toolkit.

Do I still need Promptwatch if I already pay for one of them?

If AI search is a channel you report on, yes. Neither publishes AI-referred conversion tracking, and Promptwatch adds crawler logs from Professional ($245/mo).
